Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has come out to defend his “Washenzi” remark.
Speaking at Uhuru Park,Nairobi during this year’s Labour Day celebrations, Atwoli said he did not refer to all Kikuyus when he said “Wakikuyu wa kisasa ni washenzi sana.”
He said he referred to the section of Kikuyu members who are not supporting president Uhuru Kenyatta to achieve his development agenda.
Atwoli on Sunday April 28, 2019 hit at the Kikuyu community of today calling them “washenzi” which loosely translates to uncivilized people.
He added that there should be no two centres of power in the same government blaming the Kikuyu community (where the president comes from) of failing to tame deputy president William Ruto.
He added that the Kikuyu community should not allow president Uhuru Kenyatta to be intimidated by his deputy William Ruto and his (Ruto) allies.
In the recent past, there has emerged two groups in the ruling Jubilee party. Those who are allied to the president (Kitaeleweka) and those who are allied to the deputy president (Tangatanga).
Atwoli said that should not be tolerated.
He was speaking during the COTU prayer day at St. Stephens ACK Church along Jogoo Road,Nairobi.
