No more Tsetse fly related infections for livestock of farmers surrounding Meru Conservancy Area

Kitui County Government held a meeting with officers from Kenya Tsetse Fly and Trypanosomiasis  Eradication Council (KENTTEC) led by the Regional Coordinator Isaiah Ndamburu at Kitui town today.

The deputy Governor Dr Wathe Nzau who represented H.E Hon Charity Kaluki Ngilu advised the team to consider a possibility of carrying out a public participation meetings in all the areas surrounding the entire Conservation Area which they intend to roll out the program so as to ensure that the right information has been disseminated accordingly and avoid loss of life for different species of animals both wild and domestic as well as some important insects like bees inhabiting within and around the ecosystems where the insecticide programme will be sprayed.

KENTTEC intends to spray an Insecticide within the Meru Conservation Area  [MCA] which covers, Meru National Park, Mwingi North Game Reserve, Bisinadi National Park and part of Kora Game Reserve to protect the area from any Tsetse Fly invasion using a Fixed Wing Aircraft through the method commonly known as Sequential Aerial Technique (SAT). This program is geared to eliminating Tsetse fly related infections to Livestock surrounding the Conservation Area and boost the high yield of Livestock production for the farmers within the region.

The Regional Coordinator informed the members that  Aqua Enterprises Ltd has been contracted to determine possible adverse impacts of the programme, recommend mitigation measures and prepare an Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan (EMMP).

Christopher Syengo, Chief Officer Agriculture and Livestock Development Mr. James Biii Songolo, Deputy Director Livestock Development and Environmental Impact Consultant Dr. Wangui Ndungu, from KENTTEC.
